The eternal Sonship of Christ, or that he is the Son of God by eternal generation, or that he was the Son of God before he was the son of Mary, even from all eternity, which is denied by the Socinians, and others akin, to them, was known by the saints under the Old Testament; by David.   The series of papers which follow were written in the humble attempt to consider afresh what scripture teaches concerning the Eternal Sonship of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In this timely book the authors present with clarity the scriptural basis for the doctrine of the eternal Sonship of Christ, deal thoroughly with alternate views that deny this essential doctrine, and conclude with an explanation of why this truth is so vital to evangelical Christianity. Description: The doctrine of eternal Sonship declares that the second person of the triune godhead has eternally existed as the Son. There was never a time when he was not the Son of God. There was never a time when he was not the Son of God.

    2. Eternal Sonship of Christ: Christ is the eternal Son of God. Paul wrote that “when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman” (Gal. ). Christ was the Son of God before He was born of a woman. Through the preexistent Son, God “made the universe” (Heb. ). However, the sonship of Christ is unique.   The series of papers which follow were written in the humble attempt to consider afresh what scripture teaches concerning the Eternal Sonship of our Lord Jesus Christ. Essay on the doctrine of the eternal sonship of Christ by Thomas Black Download PDF EPUB FB2

The rest of the book deals with the doctrine of Christ’s eternal Sonship and why it is important. Chapter 7, “The Meaning of the Term ‘Son of God,’” is especially well written.

Showers demonstrates that the term “Son of God” has a threefold significance: It means that the Son is a separate Person from His Father; the Son is the heir, not the servant; and the Son has the same nature as His Father. ; 1 Jn). Denying eternal sonship is a dangerous thing to do. Christology is the most important doctrine that affects our fellowship.

If someone does not hold to a true doctrine of Christ, we should separate from that person: Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God.

Without eternal Sonship, we cannot affirm that the Father has always been the Father. And if the Father has not always been in communion with the Son, then love cannot be eternal, for the Father would have had to create another being in order to give and receive : Kevin Deyoung.

In the book THE ETERNAL SONSHIP OF CHRIST (Zeller/Showers) we make it very clear that those who hold to incarnational Sonship do not deny the deity of Christ or His eternality: “Most of them, however, say that He became the Son of God at the incarnation. They believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, before his incarnation in the womb of the virgin Mary, was the eternal Word, the eternal God.

The greatest practical implication of the eternal sonship of Christ is that it is liked to the greatness of the Father’s love.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John ).

The Eternal Sonship of Christ Sincere Christians disagree concerning the issue of the eternal sonship of Christ. Some contend that Christ has always been the Son of God; therefore, He was God’s Son in eternity past.

Others argue that Christ did not become the Son of God. THE DOCTRINE OF ETERNAL SONSHIP No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, the One ever being (existing) in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him {Johnliteral rendering from the Greek).

T he doctrine of eternal Sonship declares that the second person of the triune godhead has eternally existed as the Size: 98KB. If Jesus' sonship signifies His deity and utter equality with the Father, it cannot be a title that pertains only to His incarnation.

In fact, the main gist of what is meant by "sonship" (and certainly this would include Jesus' divine essence) must pertain to the eternal attributes of Christ, not merely the humanity He assumed.

Further evidence for eternal sonship is found in the fact that Christ is represented as already the Son of God when given to the world (John17; Gal ). The Scriptural view of the sonship of Christ, as recognized in many of the great creeds of the church, is that Christ was always the Son of God by eternal generation, and that He took.

THE ETERNAL SONSHIP OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST (PREFACE) WHEN I was first led to advocate the true, proper and eternal Sonship of our most blessed Lord in the pages of the "Gospel Standard," and thus, as far as ability was given me, to "contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints," I little anticipated two consequences which have mainly sprung out of my attempt to set.

The Doctrine of Eternal Sonship is designed to protect the Person of Jesus Christ and the Triune Godhead, but it has been used and mangled. The doctrine of the sonship of Christ has been hotly debated among professing Christians for centuries.

There are those who contend that Jesus Christ is the eternally begotten Son of God. The enemies of Christ’s Divinity have, in all ages, availed themselves of this incautious method of treating this subject, and on this ground, have ever had the advantage of the defenders of the Godhead of Christ.

This doctrine of the eternal Sonship destroys the deity of Christ; now, if his deity be taken away, the whole Gospel scheme of. Most theologians recognize this, and when dealing with the sonship of Christ, they employ the term “eternal generation.” I’m not fond of the expression.

In Spurgeon’s words, it is “a term that does not convey to us any great meaning; it simply covers up our ignorance.” And yet the concept itself, I am now convinced, is biblical. The doctrine of eternal Sonship declares that the Second Person of the triune Godhead has eternally existed as the Son.

His Sonship had no beginning. There was never a time when He was not the Son of God. There has always been a Father/Son relationship in the Godhead. The doctrine of Christ’s eternal sonship is one of the steps to gross heresy regarding Jesus Christ.

Origen, who invented the terms, knew full well that they required an inferior begotten God. Arius, more consistent than Origen, applied the language to make the begotten God a creature. The Eternal Sonship of the Lord Jesus Christ – Author’s Preface by J.C.

Philpot A doctrine which has stood more than 1, years, and withstood all the assaults of men and devils; a great and glorious truth which God has written as with a ray of light in the inspired Scriptures, and revealed by His Spirit and grace to thousands of.

Begotten Without Beginning: The Eternal Sonship of Christ. The doctrine of the eternal Sonship of Christ is an important, biblical, historical truth. It is one that. Michael Ovey’s chapter, “True Sonship –Where Dignity and Submission Meet: A Fourth Century Discussion,” argues that it is “not necessarily Arian to assert that the eternal relationship of the Father and the Son is one of superordination and submission respectively.” () But he leans heavily on the pro-Nicene Hilary of Poitiers, which means he promotes eternal relations of origin to a place.

The doctrine of eternal Sonship declares that the second person of the triune godhead has eternally existed as the Son. There was never a time when he was not the Son of God. At the incarnation he became a man; he did not become the Son. Those who deny this foundational truth teach that Jesus became the Son of God at some point in history/5(2).

I am torn on this. To be honest, I’ve never been comfortable with the doctrine of eternal generation, for the very reasons Beale objects to.
